Proverbial Economics

The Bible has guidance for every aspect of life, even finance.

God put this on my mind awhile back, but I procrastinated. I wrote the
first draft in my journal and did all the Biblical research for it, but
failed to move forward with even a second draft. Well, I finally stopped
procrastinating.

Let’s take a look at the economic principles in Proverbs.

1: Make decisions that honor God; use wealth as a tool to honor Him.

“Honor the Lord with your wealth and with the best part of everything you produce. Then he will fill your barns with grain, and your vats will overflow with good wine.”

2: Value wisdom and knowledge over financial wealth.

“Joyful is the person who finds wisdom, the one who gains understanding. For wisdom is more profitable than silver, and her wages are better than gold.Wisdom is more precious than rubies; nothing you desire can compare with her.”

“How much better to get wisdom than gold, and good judgment than silver!”

3: Help others as you can.

“Do not withhold good from those who deserve it when it’s in your power to help them.”

“If you help the poor, you are lending to the Lord — and he will repay you!”

“Give freely and become more wealthy; be stingy and lose everything. The generous will prosper; those who refresh others will themselves be refreshed.”

4: Do not risk your finances for a friend’s debt.

“It’s poor judgment to guarantee another person’s debt or put up security for a friend.”

5: Laziness leads to poverty, so work hard.

“Lazy people are soon poor; hard workers get rich.”

“Lazy people want much but get little, but those who work hard will prosper.”

6: Be honest with your finances.

“The Lord detests the use of dishonest scales, but he delights in accurate weights.”

"Your kindness will reward you, but your cruelty will destroy you. Evil people get rich for the moment, but the reward of the godly will last.”

“Wealth from get-rich-quick schemes quickly disappears; wealth from hard work grows over time.”

7: Work hard and be realistic with your expectations.

“A hard worker has plenty of food, but a person who chases fantasies ends up in poverty.”

8: Do not waste education funding on fools.

“It is senseless to pay to educate a fool, since he has no heart for learning.”

9: Bribery is dishonest and evil.

“The wicked take secret bribes to pervert the course of justice.”

10: Do not be wasteful.

“The wise have wealth and luxury, but fools spend whatever they get.”

11: Protect your reputation, not your riches.

“Choose a good reputation over great riches; being held in high esteem is better than silver or gold.”

12: God created us equal, no matter our finances.

“The rich and poor have this in common: The Lord made them both.”

13: Be humble.

“True humility and fear of the Lord lead to riches, honor, and long life.”

14: Borrowing enslaves one to his lender.

“Just as the rich rule the poor, so the borrower is servant to the lender.“

15: Do not exploit the poor.

“A person who gets ahead by oppressing the poor or by showering gifts on the rich will end in poverty.”

See also: Proverbs 22:22-23, 23:10-11

16: Do not become hyper-focused on wealth.

“Don’t wear yourself out trying to get rich. Be wise enough to know when to quit.”

17: Get your stuff in order.

“Know the state of your flocks, and put your heart into caring for your herds, for riches don’t last forever, and the crown might not be passed to the next generation.”

While not everyone believes the Bible to be their sacred text, wisdom is still wisdom even if you do not follow the Word.
